In this Readings for Now Seminar, we will approach the subject of money largely through the work of the German sociologist Georg Simmel, most particularly, his massive, intricately detailed study entitled The Philosophy of Money (1900) as well as his analysis of number in the essay "On the Significance of Numbers for Social Life” (1908), bringing in a few other thinkers as well who proffer a radically distinctive understanding of money, capital, and value, including Hannah Arendt, Joseph Beuys, Kenneth Burke, Vilém Flusser, and Søren Kierkegaard, among others.
