The persecution of individuals who fight against injustice in all its many manifestations and the continuing degradation and destruction of the earth happens every day around the world in the form of attacks, threats, arrests, killings, and assassinations. According to the 2019 UN-backed “Summary for policymakers of the global assessment report on biodiversity and ecosystem services,” 1,000 environmental activists and journalists were killed during the period 2002-2013. This number includes only those working on behalf of the environment and does not take into account individuals murdered for carrying out work more broadly political––or, for that matter, individuals killed simply for who they are and what they believe, whether ethnic, religious, or creative-expressive. With this new series, we seek to memorialize the heroes of our world.
